TM 9-2320-289-208-5.DRUM, HUB, AND WHEEL BEARINGS MAINTENANCE (Cont).c.INSTALLATIONWARNINGThe tapered end of inner wheel bearing assembly (15) must be facingtoward the outboard (cap end) of axle shaft (4 or 11). The tapered end ofthe outer wheel bearing assembly (17) must be facing toward the inboard(splined end) of the axle shaft. Failure to follow this warning may forcewheel off truck during operation, causing serious injury or death topersonnel.NOTE If installing drum (1) on M1009, perform step 4. If installing hub (8), drum (9), and wheel bearings (15 or 17) on allexcept M1009, perform steps 1-3 as required. Apply grease to wheel bearing assemblies (15 or 17) before installation.(See TM 9-214). Before adjusting bearings (15 or 17), ensure that brakes are fullyreleased and do not drag.1.Aline hub (8) and drum (9) stud holes. Press 8 wheel studs (10) into hub and drum with arborpress. Hub must seat tightly against drum.2.Install outer wheel bearing assembly (17) in hub (8) past snapring slot, Install snapring (16) inslot. Tap outer wheel bearing assembly to seat on ring. Install inner wheel bearing assembly(15) and new seal (14) in hub. Position hub and drum assembly on spindle (11).TA497258-12
